A Family Affair…
Hello, I am Gary, and I am an addict! Pictured with me is my wife, Heather, my grandson Alton, and my son Lane.
After returning to Soul’s Harbor in 2014, I took a different attitude to the place. I was done with trying things my way and I began to listen to the suggestions of Brent Burmaster, Steve A., my sponsor, and the Soul’s Harbor program. I began the commitment of long-term sobriety, and my life has changed so much since then.
I began working toward getting my family and life back together again. With the help of my wife Heather, who is also in recovery, we both have been working toward a better life than we had in the past. We now rent our own home, own our cars, take care of our bills, and care for our family – all because of the program of Soul’s Harbor.
Our family that consists of Heather, our son Lane, and me, has now grown to a fourth person with the addition of our grandson Alton coming to live with us this past year. Heather and I believe that him coming to live with us, is God’s way of giving us a chance to clear up some of our past mistakes, and we have accepted this with open hearts and minds.
Our lives are happy again and although we have our difficulties, we meet these challenges with clear minds – free of drugs. We deal with life on life’s terms. Little Alton is known as the unofficial mascot of Soul’s Harbor.
My days consist of volunteering my time as Manager of the Warehouse and being on staff while Heather continues her job at a major auto parts distribution warehouse, a job she works extremely hard at, and has had for over a year and a half now. I enjoy every day at the Harbor working on my recovery with my brothers. All of this because I began to listen to the suggestions that Soul’s Harbor has been suggesting to me all along. Thank you, Soul’s Harbor! I am 8.5 years sober and clean, and it has been a REAL “family affair”!!!
