Hi, my name is Jeff, and I am an addict. I had a good childhood and supportive family. I had every opportunity in the world at my disposal, but addiction had other plans for me. I grew up playing football from the age of ten. I really enjoyed the sport and the competitiveness. Along the way, at 13, I started experimenting with meth and marijuana. By 16, I was polluting my high school with prescription pills. I was only interested in football, selling drugs, using drugs, and parties… Then the drugs became all I wanted to do. By 18, I was using all drugs and ended up in a detox for heroin for the first time. I lived in and out of institutions and jails from sixteen until around 30 years old. I was in the delayed entry program for the Marine Corps at 17 and was disqualified 2 months before I was supposed to ship out because of my criminal conduct. Overall, my disease has led me to prison, homelessness, complete desperation, and despair. It has ruined my dreams, goals, and personal relationships. Everyone who loved me tried to warn me of the dangers of how I chose to live my own life, but addiction is such a cunning beast that it drowned out anything but its own voice and selfish desires. Addiction totally consumed me. Then I heard about a solution. That solution was the program at Soul’s Harbor. It took me four tries starting in the year 2018 to get it right and graduate the program. Only because I was resistant to change and unwilling to take responsibility for my life and decisions. The moment I gave recovery a wholehearted attempt, taking suggestions from a sponsor and started following instructions, my life changed. The Harbor is an amazing place. I have stopped using drugs and alcohol, lost the desire to use, and found a new way to live. I have gainful employment and continue to work on my recovery and personal growth. I am forever indebted to the Harbor for the absolute miracle it has facilitated in my life. It restored my hope for a brighter future.
