There’s no Horsing Around…

This June, in collaboration with Equest, we began a new equine assisted counseling program. Equest is the oldest and longest running therapeutic horsemanship center in Dallas. They serve men, women, children, veterans, and anyone curious to learn more about themselves through building a relationship with a horse. Equest focuses on the power of the human-horse connection to facilitate the healing process. Horses are natural partners for counseling as they are inherently authentic and aware of the emotion and intent of those around them.

Once a month, as a reward, we will be taking a group of men to Equest. These men have shown that they are interested in growing through learning. Our clients work with a licensed mental health professional, a certified equine specialist, and a therapy horse/herd to accomplish counseling goals. In the picture above, our operation manager, Dusty is bonding with a horse named Kali. And Kali doesn’t let just anyone pet him. Her trust must be earned.

Soul’s Harbor would like to thank Equest for their partnership in this endeavor.

Financial Planning for the Future…

Here at Soul’s Harbor, we take a holistic approach to getting men sober. However, we also provide classes to help prepare them for when they leave and reenter society. Recently we had JR from Primerica teach a financial class for our residents. Primerica is a financial services company serving the middle-income market in North America.

JR taught our residents how to manage and grow their savings intelligently. How to manage their debt. And how to invest wisely in their future. JR instilled basic financial principles, which empower our residents to ask the right questions and make better fiscal decisions.  Middle- and lower-income people are largely underserved in financial education, so we are very grateful that JR would take days out of his schedule to teach our men.

Soul’s Harbor Birthday Night…

After our last birthday night, we gathered everyone with a year or more’s worth of clean recovery outside for a picture. There are over 30 men active in our community. The majority of which stay here on campus, who all have over a year of continuous clean time. Some of whom have a decade or more. Added together, there is nearly a century’s worth of sobriety in this picture. And this is why Soul’s Harbor creates such fertile environment for recovery from substance use disorders.

All of this wisdom is gathered in one place.

God truly does have his hand over our community!
